Expanding Repertoire, Styles, Audition & Performance Preparation

Advanced Level and Coaching

With great playing ability, the fine tuning of technical ease and striving for artistic musicality begins, and continues to be mastered over time.  Continued work is spent on technique and tone quality with the use of advanced scale routines from Galamian and Flesch, etudes and caprices, fast playing, ornamental playing, complicated passage work and double stops, higher positions, repertoire, orchestral playing, sight reading and audition materials. This is the level at which the player makes music communicate, learning appropriate style and a personal approach to the music.  Whether the goal is competition level and professional playing for classical violin, or performing various styles and genres on live stages, artistry and interpretive skills are the advanced player’s final goals of study.

Advanced hour long lessons are also suitable and recommended for players seeking help with improvisation and various styles, such as country, jazz, rock and Celtic.

Beyond the Basics and New Styles

Intermediate Violin

Lessons focus on techniques that will advance your playing and musicality. With scale studies, etudes, skill specific method books, and pieces from the violin repertoire, importance at the intermediate level is placed on intonation, maintaining good form and mechanics while advancing in skill level, and practice techniques to learn how to problem solve for efficient practice time. Studies for left hand technique include finger preparation and dexterity, articulation, shifting and playing in higher positions, higher octave scales and arpeggios, trills, double stops, broken chords, and vibrato. Right hand technique studies include bow control, bow speed and contact, advanced bow strokes such as spiccato, portato and martele, rhythmic bowing patterns, and playing dynamically while maintaining a good tone. Lesson time at this level may also focus on school and youth orchestra music, auditions, competitions and sight reading. Students at this level are also able to learn fiddling and alternative styles.

Getting Started

Beginning Violin

Using a combination of traditional violin pedagogy and materials from the Suzuki Method, I teach the fundamentals of technique and tone from the beginning. Importance is placed on proper posture, left hand position and bow hold. With scales exercises, etudes and short pieces, the player learns finger placement, playing in tune, how to produce a good tone, basic bow strokes, and string crossings. Taking the time to lay a solid foundation will encourage a player to continue with ease and efficiency and make playing the violin enjoyable. A 30 minute lesson is the recommended time for a young beginner, though older or adult beginners may opt for a 45 minute lesson.
